Rising Stars of Rossini
Saturday, August 4 at 5pm
Our burgeoning young artist program has welcomed extraordinary talent over the past five years, moving on to prestigious engagements at The Metropolitan Opera, Staatsoper Stutgart, Minnesota Opera, Arizona Opera, The Academy of Vocal Arts, and more!
In 2018, we take the bold new step of casting these rising stars in a fully staged production. This will be Rossini's first major work, the one act opera La Cambiale di Matrimonio, or, The Marriage Bill. This hilarious, touching work shows an eighteen year-old Rossini at his best - foreshadowing the gifts (and themes!) that would later come to light in The Barber of Seville!
The opera tells of the farcical attempts of Tobias Mill, a rich English merchant, to force his daughter, Fanny, to marry Slook, an even richer Canadian merchant. With Rosina-like flair, Fanny enlists the aid of her current lover, Edward Milfort, her servants, and eventually even Slook himself to outwit her father and live happily ever after.
