2017 Festival Choral Performance Announced

The Spiritual Side of Duke

An Homage to Ellington’s Sacred Concerts Combining Jazz, Classical, Gospel & More

Phoenicia Festival of the Voice Gospel

We are thrilled to announce that we have just confirmed The Spiritual Side of Duke for Sunday, August 6, 2017. The exact performance time is still to be determined.

The Spiritual Side of Duke explores the less recognized and spiritual elements of Ellington's famous body of work, honoring one of jazz music's greatest legacies in homage to his "sacred concerts," three massive works from Ellington that were written between 1965 and 1973 that combine elements of jazz, classical, choral, gospel, blues and dance.

This septet led by percussionist John Lumpkin features vocalists Brianna Thomas, who has collaborated with distinguished artists including Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis and Wycliffe Gordon, and Vuyo Sotashe, prize winner of the Mid-Atlantic, Shure Montreux, and Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal Competitions.
