2017 Festival Announces Opportunity for Local Youth to Perform in La Boheme

The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for local youth to participate in a children’s chorus that will perform in the second act of the star event of this year’s Festival, Puccini’s beloved opera La Boheme. As part of its long-standing commitment to educate and reach out to the next generation of music lovers, the Festival is proud to offer the children in our community the memorable experience of performing on the Main Stage alongside international stars and orchestra in this fully staged, professional production on August 5th in Phoenicia, New York.

The Festival firmly believes that involving arts in the community bonds its members together. By bringing this opportunity to our youth, the Festival stays true to its mission to elevate the human spirit and empower the community through music. The Festival is focusing on education more than ever, and will also be hosting a week of educational programs, including a young artists’ program, leading up to the festival in August. Other community outreach and enrichment programs offered by the Festival throughout the year include school visits, motivational clinics, workshops and apprenticeships.

All children between the ages of 8 and 18 who enjoy singing are welcome to join the children’s chorus for La Boheme. In preparation for the performance, the Festival foundation faculty will offer free vocal and musical training for the children’s chorus. The ability to read music is not necessary. Class participation is free, and rehearsals are set to begin in May at Bennett Elementary School in Boiceville, New York. The children’s chorus will be coached by Harvey Boyer, Director of Education at the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. Mr. Boyer holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Ithaca College School of Music, and has directed band and chorus at the Onteora Central School District for the past 20 years. He is also the founder and co-director with his wife, Erica Boyer, of the Boyerstock Summer Music Camp.

Children aged 8-18 interested in this opportunity should contact Harvey Boyer at childrenchorus@phoeniciavoicefest.org.

La Boheme will grace the Main Stage at the Festival on Saturday, August 5th. The children’s chorus will appear during Act Two and sing in Italian. The opera is conducted by Maestro David Wroe.

Now in its 8th season, the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice is a one-of-a-kind music event that allows audiences to experience world-class talent, often only seen in metropolitan venues, in a more intimate setting while relishing the stunning beauty of the surrounding Catskills Mountains. The Festival is set to take place this year on August 4-6, 2017 in the small, picturesque village of Phoenicia, New York.
