Puccini’s soaring, haunting and captivating Madama Butterfly  starring the celebrated Korean/American  soprano Yunah Lee as Cio Cio San,  the  tenor  Richard Troxell as Pinkerton,  Nina Yoshida Nelsen as Suzuki and Louis Otey as Sharpless. The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra will be  conducted by Metropolitan Opera maestro and Festival Music Director  Steven White.

Hurricane Irene left town well before this performance of Madame Butterfly. And though the storm did plenty of damage, in many ways it doesn’t compare to what Cio-Cio-San goes through in this Puccini tearjerker. “Poor little Butterfly”, the lyrics go.

The geisha marries an American naval officer named Pinkerton, who gets her pregnant and then heads back to the States for three years. When he returns to Japan, he’s accompanied by his new wife.

Forced to turn her back on her community and later give up her child to Pinkerton, Butterfly is left with only one choice in the tragic final scene.

Bring your wine, picnic and blanket and enjoy this timeless classic under the stars on the beautiful Festival Stage in Phoenicia’s Parish Field.
